Heartlands

Well, we are back in the heartlands! Our drives to and from parks have gotten a lot more Illinois-looking although there are still plenty of hills.

But, the Badlands definitely didn't look like Illinois! We weren't able to spend much time in the park and it was a little hot to do much hiking (97°f 😳) but we really enjoyed the scenic drive. Teddy Roosevelt National Park had some 'badland' areas but it couldn't compare to the real deal!

The beautiful transition between multi-colored rocks and rolling hills was a real treat for the eyes after a long drive. We got out at every pullout to see a new perspective of the unique park.

After we checked out the Visitor Center (ahem, gift shop, ahem) we were back in the road to get to our campsite in Wind Cave.

Surprise surprise, we didn't know much about what to do Wind Cave or why it was even called that. Was there even a cave? Whose to say! Turns out, yes.

Wind Cave is one of the largest cave systems in the U.S with unique formations and 'wind' caused from the changing air pressure. But above the cave is rolling grasslands and many many bison.

But yet again, pretty hot! And not too much hiking to do. So we enjoyed our time in the park checking out the Visitor Center once again, playing cards in the shade and just generally taking it slow.

As our trip goes on we have been taking it slow a bit more and more as we get a tad tuckered out. Not to worry though! Our Dad is joining us soon and he always brings the energy 😎. Plus, as soon as we see some mountains our motivation to climb something will kick in.

  1. Did you do the wind cave tour to cool off? I'm sure CO will be more to your liking., if the altitude doesn't make you sick! 🗻🚶‍♀️🏞⛺️ You may enjoy sleeping in your bed and not eating the same thing every day, but coming home to Illinois , flat and hot and humid, is going to be a little disappointing after all the exciting terrain you've covered!

  2. The part that made me the happiest was hearing about the Bison! Cave exploring sounds like it'd be a fun change of pace, as long as it's not in any tight spots. -quin
